First One Way Street in London – 23rd August 1617...

On 23rd August 1617 the introduction of one-way streets in alleys near the River Thames were commissioned by King James to regulate traffic in the square mile of the City of London.

Because the streets were too narrow for movement in both directions and road users were unable to coordinate easily, the King decided that the City required a major change! He hoped it would calm the traffic and reduce congestion.

How many of us have accidentally (whoops!) traveled down a one-way street? We have culprits here in the office!
