Anne Boleyn Arrested – 2nd May 1536

On 2nd May 1536 Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII second wife, is arrested and taken to the Tower of London.

Anne, the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire and Elizabeth Boleyn, Countess of Wiltshire, was a key figure in the political and religious upheaval that became the start of the English Reformation.

Historical Events in the Life of Queen Anne Boleyn

1st June 1533 - Anne Boleyn is crowned Queen of England; Henry broke with the Catholic Church in order for this to take place.

7th September 1533 – Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth I) was born.

Summer 1534 – Anne suffers a miscarriage.

January 1536 – Anne suffers a further miscarriage. When Henry discovered this second baby had been a boy, he became convinced the marriage was cursed. Henry was still desperate for a male heir and he blamed Anne for this misfortune. He took on Anne’s lady-in-waiting Jane Seymour as his mistress and looked for a way to end his marriage.

21st April 1536 - Thomas Cromwell begins to plot Anne Boleyn's downfall while feigning illness.

2nd May 1536 - Anne Boleyn is arrested and taken to the Tower of London. At her trial, presided over by the Duke of Norfolk, Anne was accused of adultery and witchcraft. She was convicted and imprisoned in the Tower of London.

15th May 1536 - Anne Boleyn & her brother George, Lord Rochford, are accused of adultery and incest.

17th May 1536 - Anne Boleyn's 4 "lovers" (Sir Francis Weston, William Brereton, Mark Smeaton, Sir Henry Norris and Anne's brother Lord Rochford ) are executed.

19th May 1536 - Anne Boleyn, second wife of English King Henry VIII, is beheaded at the Tower of London on charges of adultery, incest and treason.

19th May 1536 – Anne is buried in the Church of St Peter ad Vincula, Tower Hill.

Anne was the first English queen to be publicly executed and rather than deny her guilt, she used her final moments to deliver a speech praising King Henry VIII, stating that, "a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord."

Death is a little bit excessive for Adultery and Incest, however, the last treason trial was that of William Joyce, "Lord Haw-Haw", who was executed by hanging in 1946. Since the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 became law, the maximum sentence for treason in the UK has been life imprisonment.
